Pillar 06 · The tools that do the work

The Workshop

The tools that actually do the work. Systematic comparative reviews — we test four to six products in a category, then publish the methodology, results, and the Winner / Best Buy / Also Recommended hierarchy. Working calculators and decision aids land alongside as the pillar matures. New entries monthly, on the first Wednesday.

What it is

One category, one essay

Each Tool Test compares four to six products in a category over four to eight weeks of real use. Methodology stated. Criteria explained. Winner named. Failure modes per loser specified.

Who it's for

Growers who buy once

For people tired of "5 best pruners" listicles without methodology. The Guild tells you what we tested, how, and which one earned the Winner. Buy once, with reasoning that holds up.

How it's written

Tested at the bench

Every Tool Test runs in a real growing space — weeks of actual use across pruning, propagation, pest management, and substrate work. Anti-recommendations get the same weight as winners: when a category fails, the methodology shows why.

The pillar opens July 2026 with the Hand Lenses Tool Test. Five comparative reviews queued: hand lenses, bypass pruners, pump sprayers, moisture meters (an honest takedown), and pH meters.
