The Apprenticeship

Learn the craft and science of growing, from the ground up.

A free, ten-module apprenticeship that takes you from "I water it when the leaves droop" to a working understanding of why plants do what they do — and what to do about it.

What it is

Ten short modules, each one a system you'll use the rest of your growing life. About 25–35 hours total reading, plus the Specimen Practicum: keeping one plant alive across the seasons and documenting the care. Finish the modules and the practicum, and you earn the rank of Grower.

It's free. There's no upsell, no certification fee, no AI-generated filler. The curriculum is written the way the rest of the Guild's work is written — cited where it matters, plainspoken everywhere else, and respectful of the reader's time. The Apprenticeship is what the Library was built to support.

The ten modules

What you'll learn.

Every module is the same shape: six to ten micro-lessons of about 300–650 words each, one concept per lesson, a short retrieval check at the bottom of every one. One field exercise per module, on a real plant. No quizzes for points, no badges, no leaderboards — just progress and mastery.

    How a Plant Works

    Before you can keep a plant alive, you need to know what it's actually doing.

  2. II

    Reading Light

    The room that looks bright to you is probably dim to your plant. Learning to tell the difference is the most useful thing you'll do as a grower.

  3. III

    Water, Properly

    More people kill houseplants with a watering can than with neglect — not because they water wrong, but because they're answering the wrong question.

  4. IV

    What Substrate Is

    Substrate is a system that delivers air, water, anchorage, and a nutrient buffer — not dirt from a bag.

  5. V

    Containers & Drainage

    The container is half of the air-water equation. Its volume, height, material, and drainage decide how long water sits and how fast air returns.

  6. VI

    Feeding

    You don't feed a plant; you supply the minerals it can't photosynthesize. What fertilizer actually is, when it helps, and when it makes things worse.

  7. VII

    Reading a Plant

    The master skill of the apprenticeship: systematic observation. Turgor, color, growth pattern, root state, and the early signs of trouble — what to look at, and what it tells you.

  8. VIII

    First Repot

    The hands-on intervention that scares new keepers, made into a calm, four-step procedure. When to do it, what to move it into, and how to nurse the recovery.

  9. IX

    Diagnosis

    Diagnosis is a method — symptom to hypothesis to test — that starts at culture, not at the spray bottle. Where everything you've learned in the first eight modules comes together.

  10. X

    Propagating

    The payoff. Making new plants from the ones you've kept alive — cuttings, division, offsets — and what's actually happening at the cut.

Coming late summer

How it's taught

Most plant courses do one of two things badly. They either dump a textbook on you and call it rigorous, or they hand you ten "easy tips" and call it accessible. The Apprenticeship rejects that trade. The lessons are short and finishable, the science is real, and the things you can't see — how water climbs, what air-filled porosity actually feels like, why a window six feet from your plant is darker than it looks — get the interactive treatment that makes them click.

Micro-lessons, one concept each

Six to ten lessons per module, roughly 300–650 words, about six to eight minutes of reading. You can finish a lesson on a coffee break and actually remember it afterward.

A retrieval check on every lesson

"Strengthen your understanding" at the bottom of every page — application questions, not restate-the-sentence. Spaced pull-forward from earlier lessons. The single most evidence-backed move in learning science.

One "diagnose and match" per module

A short generative task at the synthesis lesson: pair the symptom with the cause, the component with what it contributes, the method with the plant. Where the module's whole point gets exercised.

Simulations for the invisible

Not for everything — only for concepts that words can't carry. The perched water table in a pot. Photoinhibition. The water column climbing the xylem. One or two per program, where they earn it.

One field exercise per module

A real plant, a real observation, a real procedure. Light audit. Water log. Substrate squeeze test. Pot audit. The exercises are what move the work off the page and onto your shelf.

The Specimen Practicum

After the ten modules: pick one plant and keep it alive across the seasons, with notes. The practicum is the bridge from "read the work" to "did the work" — and it's how you earn the rank of Grower.

Where the Apprenticeship fits

The Guild has four ranks: Apprentice, Grower, Educator, Steward. You enter as an Apprentice the moment you reserve your spot. The Apprenticeship and the Specimen Practicum are the path to Grower — the primary tier of the Guild. Educator and Steward open later, for Growers whose work or service shapes what the Guild becomes.
