One rhythm across the genus. Monstera is a genus of roughly fifty climbing aroids native to the tropical forests of the Americas, from southern Mexico down into South America. In the wild they haul themselves up tree trunks by thick aerial roots, and their leaves slit and perforate as they climb into brighter light (Plants of the World Online, n.d.; Encyclopædia Britannica, n.d.).
Because they evolved to the same job — climb, reach light, hold moisture — the whole genus wants the same things indoors: bright indirect light, a chunky mix, and something to climb. Learn it once and it carries from a common deliciosa to the rarer collector plants.
What differs between species is mostly cosmetic: leaf size, how early the holes appear, and variegation. Those differences, and the few that change care, live on the species cards in this guide.
Light. Bright, indirect light is the whole game. The more usable light a Monstera gets, short of harsh midday sun, the larger and more fenestrated its leaves come in. Deep shade gives small, entire leaves and a plant that reaches for the window.
Water. Let the top half of the pot dry, then water until it runs from the base and empty the saucer. These roots rot in soggy mix faster than they suffer from a dry day or two, so err toward dry.
Humidity & warmth. Aim for 50 to 60 percent humidity and rooms of 65 to 80°F (18–27°C). Keep them off cold glass and away from heating vents, and never below about 55°F (13°C).
Substrate & nutrients. Pot in a chunky aroid mix built on orchid bark with perlite and a little coir, so air reaches the roots and water drains quickly. Give a balanced fertilizer about monthly through spring and summer, and ease off in winter.
Support & potting. Nearly every Monstera is a climber. A moss pole or plank gives the aerial roots something to grip, and a supported plant rewards you with markedly larger, better-fenestrated leaves. Step up one pot size when roots fill the current one.
Young Monstera leaves are often entire, with no holes at all. The splits and windows arrive as the plant matures and climbs into better light. A plant making small, solid leaves is usually asking for more light and a pole, not more water.

Every part of a Monstera holds calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing a leaf brings on fast burning and swelling of the lips, mouth and throat, with heavy drooling, in people and in pets. Keep them out of reach of children, cats and dogs, and seek help if swelling or trouble swallowing follows a bite (ASPCA, n.d.).
